Frequently Asked Questions About Support Groups
Can I just walk in? Do I need to register for groups? Is there any cost?
In-person walk ins are welcome and encouraged. Online DBSA-GC groups do not require registration. Click the "Zoom Support Groups" tab, and then the button for the group you want to join. There is no charge for groups, but our chapter runs on donations, so donations are always appreciated.

Are the facilitators who run the support groups medical professionals?
No. Facilitators are peers - people with lived experience, just like you. They have learned to cope with their illnesses and are giving back by running support groups. All our facilitators are trained, having participated in peer support group facilitator training with our national office located in Chicago, Illinois.

How are the support groups run?
We start out by reading a preamble which sets forth the guidelines for the groups - use "I" language, share the air (everyone gets a chance to speak), anything said is confidential, everyone is equal, and differences of opinion are okay. The facilitator will then lead discussions and move discussions along throughout the course of the group.

Do I have to talk at the group?
No. Nobody is forced to speak. Feel free to sit quietly and listen to your peers. Showing up for yourself and sharing space with us is totally ok. If online, please communicate with the facilitator through chat.

Can I bring my significant other, spouse, child, family member or friend to a group?
Groups are open to adults 21+ unless specified. The only persons we prohibit are students or medical professionals observing groups, because we attempt to offer a safe space for/and respect the privacy of our members and group attendees. Please contact us at wecanhelp@dbsa-gc.org with any other questions.

Do I have to be medically diagnosed with a mental illness to attend a support group?
No. Everyone wanting or needing support is welcome. DBSA does offer specific groups for the Black Community, Young Adults, LGBTQIA+, family & friends, dual diagnosis, and others. Please visit the National DBSA website for specific groups not offered at our local Chapter.

How often should I attend?
As often as you're able or feel comfortable. We recommend going to a group at least three times to get the general feel of the group to decide if it is/is not for you. And try other groups throughout the country as well. Zoom makes connecting easy from the comfort of your own home or when you're on the go.

Are support groups confidential?
Absolutely!

May I attend more than one group?
Yes, definitely! No limit, attend as many as you want or need. Join in person or online whenever you would like.
